Dar es Salaam. A Tanzanian lady, Lucy Odiwa, has emerged the winner of the Women Micro-Entrepreneurs Showcase aimedat helping to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Branded ‘SDG and Her Petition’, the contest was co-hosted by the World Bank Group, the Wharton School Zicklin Centre, UNDP and UN Women on Wednesday, August 29, in Washington DC, in the United States.
Her micro-enterprise, Women Choice Industries, seeks to empower women and girls in Tanzania by promoting safer Menstrual Health hygiene Management (MHM), sharing information, products, and related services.
According to a media statement released by the WB, the winner outshined over 1,200 other entries from 88 countries.
Women Choice Industries produces reusable sanitary pads, post-partum maternity pads, child and adult diapers given that lack of MHM products is considered as a barrier to low-income women and girls to attend school and work.
“The products seek promote MHM in schools and boost quality education for all, helping Tanzania to achieve SDG targets for women’s health, and girls’ access to education,” Says Ms Odiwa.
